upfront

I have been a subscriber to Vogue for quite some time, and one of my favorite parts is the Upfront editorial, where our society's successful, intelligent, beautiful women and men write stories about events in their lives. They may relinquish secrets, reveal shocking details, but they put themselves out there-and the stories always give me hope. You know how it is when you are reading something and it somehow is the perfect time to be reading that certain something, because it relates so closely to whatever may be going on in your life at the moment? I love that. When that happens, I usually have a shudder and a "omg" moment. But I happened to be working out this morning when I was reading my shiny glossy new vogue, so I was panting instead, but my mind was racing. Here are some little tidbits from the writer...

"When you have children and your husband leaves you, two things happen: you become a mess and the strongest woman alive all at once. Every instinct tells you to stay at the bottom of your bed in a dirty nightgown for the next three years, but that instinct doesn't do much for the two kids waiting for their cereal bowls to be filled. I was angry and sad to have my beloved marriage taken away. I could live with the sadness. It felt organic, like it could change and decompose. But the anger felt oppressive and interfered with my life-I couldn't even make the beds."

"I believe in love. I believe in hard times and love winning. I believe people make mistakes. I believe people can want two things at once. I believe very few people want to hurt others. I believe people are selfish and generous at the same time. I believe that life can surprise you. I believe in happy endings."
